5 quick tips when using a Looper Pedal

Course: Acoustic Looper Bootcamp

In this video

My top 5 tips for using a looper pedal, condensed in to a short video and writeup so you can easily refer back to them anytime you need.

There was a lot of content in the previous video, so here I just wanted to give you my top 5 tips for using a looper pedal so you can easily refer back to them anytime you need!

5 quick tips when using a Looper Pedal

1 - Start simple

Start with a cheap one button looper with no extras. More expensive loopers do the same thing but have lots of other features that frankly most people will never use (though they can be fun later!)

2 - Playing in time is the most important thing

If a loop is out of time you need to erase it and start again. Most people play good but tap the looper with their foot at the wrong time.

Practice tapping your foot at the start of every bar for everything you play. This will train you to be able to tap the looper pedal at the correct time to create the perfect loop.

3 - Try recording your first loop with a metronome

Loops seem to speed up, slow down or sound out of time? Use a metronome and play along to this when you record your first loop. Then turn off the metronome and play along to your loop.

4 - Learn to erase the last loop

Cut out frustrations by learning to erase the last loop you did. All loopers haver this capability, usually by holding down one of the main buttons with your foot. Learn how to do this with yours to avoid always having to start again.

5 - Improve your playing when heard back on recordings

Hearing yourself play back on recordings can expose aspects of our playing we don't like, but we can quickly eradicate many of these things if we know what to look out for. Some ideas for this include

  • Practice home recording to fine tune your playing in more detail
  • Routinely play along to real recordings of songs you know to improve your timing and musicianship
  • Watch others loop and jam to learn and get inspired!
