Course: Lead Guitar Bootcamp with Sam Bell

In this video

Sam demonstrates a technique known as 'String Skipping', which has a 'wide' sound as we play through an arpeggio by hitting notes further away from each other.

Sam demonstrates a technique known as 'String Skipping', which has a 'wide' sound as we play through an arpeggio by hitting notes further away from each other. This presents a challenge through big stretches with the left hand going across the strings.

Lesson aims

  • Learn the concept of string skipping and how it is created in a musical context in relation to chords

  • Try pick accurately each string using a similiar pattern in previous videos but with larger stretches in the left hand

Exercise - Play string skipping arpeggio within chord shapes

The picking pattern for this lesson is similar as in lesson 3, however we are jumping over strings to perform the string skipping technique.

The challenge here is picking the correct string with the larger jumps, so it is important to use the little finger for selecting stretched notes across a string. Focus on opening up the hand up to deliver a really clear sound.

Be aware that the arpeggios are simply outlining chords and knowledge on the CAGED system is useful here to 'unlock' the guitar and produce these interesting patterns.

Next Up: Master pentatonic sequences

Well done! Let's jump into the next lesson of the course.
