Every guitarist wants to be able to come up with a killer riff like in their favorite song – who wouldn’t want to do that!

Here, I share some common elements of rock riffs and some practical tips on how to come up with your own, even when ideas and inspiration escape you!

Core elements of a rock riff

  • Power chords, both open and traditional

  • Pentatonic notes, or some single note pattern

  • Need more notes? Go chromatic!

Tips on practically coming up with your own rock riff

  • Start with a drum track you like to define the grove

  • Use the on beat the off beat and mute so we can hear the drums. Early 4s etc.

  • Don’t forget the chickas, slides, legato playing and any other phrasing to add character
