Major Pentatonic Scale

Course: Lead Guitar Scales

In this video

Here, we introduce the major pentatonic scale and the musical application of it.

This video introduces the major pentatonic scale and the musical application of it. This uses the same shapes as the minor pentatonic, but we need to play, practice and use it differently.

Lesson aims

  1. Be able to play the major pentatonic scale position 5 in every key
  2. Begin to understand the musical situations that the major pentatonic scale is appropriate for
  3. Please note that this is the same shape as Minor Pentatonic it is Pattern 1 - but now the root note has changed, the chord tones are different so you have to use it a different way - and we call it Major Pentatonic Pattern 5

Part 1 - Major pentatonic scale - position 5

Exercise 4a - Major pentatonic scale position 5

Part 2 - Major pentatonic scale extensions

Yes, these are the same extensions as used in the minor pentatonic, great huh! Just remember about the change in root note, which impacts what lead lines and licks we play - see the licks module for full guidance on that.

Exercise 4b - Major pentatonic scale extensions

Next Up: Major Scale Position 1

Well done! Let's jump into the next lesson of the course.
