Introduction to Fingerstyle

Course: Fingerstyle Introduction, Minor keys and the A Minor Pentatonic Scale

In this video

Introduction to Fingerstyle guitar. This lesson is from the Andy Guitar Beginner Guitar Course.

I want to show you methods and techniques that will level up your Fingerstyle playing at this late beginner stage.

Orthodox VS Clawhand are two key methods for this 'right hand technique' in Fingerstyle - Let's focus on the Orthodox method for our Fingerstyle Patterns

Orthodox Method

Number 1 pattern to learn - Inside out pattern

  • Thumb - assign to strings 4, 5 & 6 and focus on playing thumb only first for this pattern

  • Fingers - Index/Middle and Ring finger assigned to strings 3, 2 & 1 - play the pattern with fingers only

  • Together - we can now put these two together to form the whole pattern

With this knowledge some of the classic songs will be accessible!

  • Landslide, The Chain, Let Her Go, Dear Prudence

  • Travis picking also seen in Country e.g. Johnny Cash as well as Dylan style folk strumming, with or without a pick
