In this video

In this guitar tutorial we look at how to play Last Nite by The Strokes, one of the best indie songs of the 2000s! Learn this song with the video tutorial below, then jam along to Andy's band to learn the full song all the way through!

Song breakdown

Chords & rhythm guitar techniques

The chords used in this entire song are simply C major, F major and G major, with further chords implied by the bass line. However, this song uses power chords, an octave technique and triads which will need to be practiced heavily to be able to play this song well.

Main Guitar Solo

This solo is based on the C minor pentatonic scale (with one note from the Dorian Mode), which is odd as this song is in the key of C major - but this odd logic happens a lot in indie rock songs! It uses techniques such as string bending, unison bending and hammer ons/ flick offs.

Andy Guitar Band - Live cover of Last Nite

Remember, to play in a live band you don't just practice till you can get it right, you need to practice till you never get it wrong! Therefore it is an essential part of this course that you revisit these pages and play along to the live covers like you're a in a real band and you're rehearsing your live set! Here's the live cover alone so you can jam along to the live band without having to search through the tutorial video - enjoy jamming along!
