Namely:

  • Dsus2

  • Dsus4

  • Asus2

  • Asus4

Why learn Sus chords?

Sus chords create great riffs and wonderful embellishments, often by literally lifting a finger.

Dsus2:

  • Dsus2 just lift the middle finger

  • Let string 1 sound out

  • This E note is the 2nd note of the D major scale

  • This suspends the third, hence Sus2

Dsus4:

  • Add the little finger to play fret 3 string 1

  • This is G note is the 4th note of the D major scale

  • It again suspends the 3rd note of the scale making it a sus4 chord

Asus2:

  • I recommend 3 fingers in a line to play the A major chord

  • Lift the ring finger off to let the open B string ring out

  • This is the 2nd note of the A major scale - A - B - C# - D - E - F# - G# - A

  • Suspends the 3rd in the A major chord making it sus2

Asus4:

  • Same 3 finger A major shape to start

  • Shift the ring finger up 1 fret on the B string from 2nd to 3rd fret

  • This suspends the 3rd note of the scale making it a sus4 chord
