In this track we're playing the D, A and G major chords 2 times round with single strums and then 8ths strumming with downs and ups.
8ths Strumming - Downs and Ups
8ths strumming count:
1 - and - 2 - and - 3 - and - 4 - and
On the last beat, the 'and', we can lift off the chord hand all together to make sure we are ready for the next chord on beat 1.
8th strumming with ups and downs helps us play along to faster songs and tempos, as it is more economical compared with strumming all downs.
As a rule, the down strums always have to be on the beat. With this strumming, the up strums have to be on the off beat.
Remember to tap your foot to the beat!
It really helps if you develop the habit of tapping your foot whenever you listen to any music. This will help you feel a beat naturally, rather than having to count it.
You should also work towards tapping your foot on the beat with ALL strumming patterns you learn. This means you will internalise the rhythm and make playing in time natural and easy!
