Beginner Acoustic Jam Track 6 - 12 Bar Blues in A

Course: G major Chord & Common Chord Progressions

In this video

We're checking out the 12 Bar Blues chord progression in the key of A. This lesson is from the Andy Guitar Beginner Guitar Course.

We're checking out the 12 Bar Blues chord progression in the key of A.

The chords we need are the A5, D5 and E5 which are all great 1 finger power chords! but the fun doesn't stop there as we can add the Blues style riff to each of these chords, just like with the E5 to E6 riff, we only need two fingers to do it.

The main challenge here is to follow this longer chord progression which has a very specific order that we need to learn. It's a great challenge to set us up for success when it comes to longer chord progressions in some of our favourite songs, not just the Blues.

Single strum Blues

No matter how we're strumming the Jam Tracks, either single strums or 8ths all downs, we follow this chord progression:

  • 4 bars of A

  • 2 bars of D

  • 2 bars of A

  • 2 bars of E

  • 2 bars of A

12 Bar Blues with Single notes

Alternatively, we can start playing on each beat of the bar using single strings and the open A note, D string 5th fret on string 5 and E string 7th string 5. This helps us internalise that 12 bar structure while we also work on some essential single string practice (save those fingers from all the hard chord work).
