Funk Style 7th Chords

Course: Improver to Intermediate

In this video

We learn funk style 7th chords, a major chord with a flattened 7th, nice and jazzy! Part of Andy’s Improver Guitar Course.

A dominant 7th chord is a major chord with a flattened 7th note added. This gives the major chord a blues or jazz ring to it, like with the 7th chords covered at Level 7 of my Beginners Course.

These chords are great for blues and funk, but are present in all genres. They are generally used before a change of chord.

It is important to learn dominant 7th barre chords as these are the gateway to learning how changing one note affects a chord in a more subtle way that just major or minor. It is also the gateway to being able to add a Funk, Blues or Jazz feel to any song you play, which will elevate your playing and can be super fun!
