Song 3 - The Holly and the Ivy

Course: Christmas Songs Vol 1

In this video

Welcome to song 3 of this '12 Songs of Christmas' series. In this lesson we'll learn how to play a 3-chord arrangement of 'The Holly and the Ivy'.

This is another song in the key of A, but each song always presents its own challenges through the chord progression which we need to learn and follow on the chord sheet.

Key Learning Points

  • Improving changes between the A, D, and E chords

  • Further improving the skill of reading and understanding chord sheets

There are lots of smaller techniques to be aware of when we are improving our chord changes, which can unlock a smoother action.

  • Use pivot fingers - some fingers don't need to move and can act as a pivot point between chord changes.

  • Lift and press at the same time - by not lifting our fingers too far off the fretboard and placing them back down all at the same time, we create the foundation for really smooth chord changes.
