Glide up the fretboard FAST! - Week 9

Course: Technique Tune Ups

In this video

We practice moving up the fretboard on just one string! Moving freely on one string is very useful for jumping between scales but for now this warm up just helps us get that feeling under our fingers.

Welcome to week 9 of the Technique weekly challenge!

For this video we look at moving up the fretboard with just one string! Moving freely on one string is very useful for jumping between scales but for now this warm up just helps us get that feeling under our fingers.

Exercise 1 - Learn The Pattern

  • Start on fret 1 of your preferred string (string 1 used in the lesson video)

  • Using the fret numbers we can learn the pattern as frets ‘1 2 3’ first

  • Then the second half is frets ‘2 3 4’

  • Put it together as ‘1 2 3 2 3 4’ - Picking direction ‘D U D U D U’

  • Finger positions is simply 1st fret/index finger through to 4th fret/little finger

Then, move this pattern around using the same finger pattern but two frets up each time - 3rd fret, then 5th fret and so on!

Remember from week 1 ’Slow, Slow, Quick!’ as we practice each movement!

Exercise 2  - Reverse Pattern

Finally around the 12th fret position, work back in the reverse order ‘4 3 2 3 2 1’. Still jumping two frets each time the pattern is complete.

Tip!: Keep the thumb over the top of the neck.

A lead guitar player needs to be ready for anything and with the thumb over the neck we can bend the string at any moment. In this context, to finish off a gliding run up or down the fretboard!
