Course: Power Chords, Arpeggios and Fingerpicking

In this video

We're taking a look at Root 5 Major and Minor Barre chords.

The main one that occurs in many songs and chord progressions at this level is the Bm chord, so this is recommended to focus on. It occurs in the Key of D with a chord progression: D, Bm, G & A for example.

Instant Root 5 Barre Chord Tip

We can also see the Root 5 major and minor barre chords from the Open A major or minor chord shape

  • Play either open A major or minor chord

  • Move that shape up by 1 fret

  • Use your first finger to barre (essentially replacing the nut of the guitar)

  • This is now named an A# barre chord

  • Keep moving the shape up and the root note dictates the name of that chord

The 6 Key Tones:

This is how we can remember quickly a few notes on the frets

  • Each fret with a dot on it is a Key Tone

  • These are Frets 3, 5 & 7 on strings 6 and 5

  • G, A and B root 6

  • C, D and E root 5

  • These notes are important as these are the natural notes

  • All the notes between the naturals are flats or sharps

Hearing the difference

We also need to be able to hear the difference between major and minor

Play a Root note and then major 3rd and minor 3rd - HEAR this difference!

When you recognise the sound and also position of this note in the chords you'll instinctively know what chord it is

Recommended chord changes
