Rock Lead 02 - Pentatonic Patterns

Course: Electric Lead Guitar

In this video

We look at pentatonic scale patterns. In pattern studies we essentially play the notes of a scale out of order but in a common pattern. Part of Andy’s Rock Lead Guitar Course.

In pattern studies we essentially play the notes from a scale out of order but in a common pattern. The follow pattern is the one I have found most useful for myself and for my students. It is found in the solos for ‘Live Forever’ by Oasis, Don’t Believe A Word by Thin Lizzy and many AC/DC Angus Young solos!

The exercise below is in the key of E and uses the E minor pentatonic scale. This is the same scale shape we used on the last page, but on the last page we were in the key of A.

I have done this just to get you familiar with playing the same scale shape in different keys, which is some- thing that is encouraged in your general playing!
