Lead licks with the Major 6th interval

Course: Learn to Jam Lead Guitar

In this video

The Major 6th is an interval using the 6th degree i.e. 6th note of a major scale. Licks using the Major 6th interval tend to be played in the fashion covered in this lesson. The lead part at the start of Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival is a superb example of a lead part that uses major 6th licks.

Learn the neck positions and a few licks from the video lesson and interactive TAB on this page, then try and improvise your own solo using these notes and licks!

Blue = notes from C chord. Orange = notes from F chord. Yellow = C major scale notes.

How to make the most of this course

See below interactive TAB synced to video for both the lead and rhythm lines for this jam. Use this to learn a few lick ideas to get you started improvising, or learn the full solos if you wish! Useful features of the interactive TAB player include;

  • Slow down and loop sections to break down longer, faster sections into manageable licks
  • Activate the 'fretboard visualisation', which shows which note is being played as well as shapes being used, all in real time
  • See the TAB brought to life as the player syncs to the video in real time!
