Vertical 3 Note Per String Runs 2

Course: Learn To Shred with Sam Bell

In this video

This lesson will help to develop your alternate picking across multiple strings

In this lesson we look at an ascending phrase using alternate picking. This exercise is also a good example of "chunking" - that is combining memorised segments to create longer licks and runs.

E minor scale

Here we're using the E minor scale at the 12th fret. On the lower strings we move down to use the 10th fret to keep the fretting pattern going across all the strings.

How to make the most of this course

See below for the interactive TAB synced to video this exercise. Use this to help you master this lick and build up your speed. Useful features of the interactive TAB player include:

  • Slow down the lick to see how it's played
  • Loop a section to focus on that part before moving on to the next section
  • Activate the 'fretboard visualisation', which shows which note is being played as well as which shapes are being used, all in real time
  • See the TAB brought to life as the player syncs to the video in real time!
