Jazz Chords You Should Know! (9th, 11th and 13th chords)

Course: Advanced Intervals for Lead Guitar

In this video

In this lesson we're looking at 9th and 13th chords. These chord voicings are very common in jazz guitar playing, so it's a good idea to get familiar with them. Like with barre chords, we rely on common shapes so that we can play 9th and 13th chords all over the neck.

Lesson aims

  1. Learn the common shapes for 9th, 11th and 13th chords

  2. Be sure to mute strings that shouldn't be ringing out

  3. If you have a loop pedal, try creating a loop with these chords and then solo over the top of it using the chord tones

Example 5a - Jazz-style progression with 6th and 9th chords

Example 5b - Slow Jazz progression with melody
