In this lesson we're looking at how to record Electric Guitar using Garageband! Here, we take a complete look at how to set up a session to do some basic guitar recording.

Key points

  • My recommended audio interface is a Focusrite Scarlet, as stated in the previous lesson.

  • Make sure you set your inputs and outputs appropriately, and if you're not using an amp, make sure you check the "I want to hear my instrument as I play and record" button

  • Set your input gain properly on your audio interface - if it's too low then the sound won't be strong, but if it's too high it'll clip and distort

  • Choose a sound preset that you like on the channel. If using the amps in Garageband, these settings can be adjusted after recording

Recording an amp with a microphone

Here's a video from the archives which shows how guitar amps are recorded in the studio. This can all be recreated at home if you have the gear (provided your neighbors are out - it might get loud!)

The perfect hybrid - Two Notes Captor X

These days, I record all my electric guitar tutorials through the Two Note Captor X, usually using my Victory Sheriff 22 amp head.

It's basically like using Garageband with a real amp! And it sounds incredible at any volume, while allowing for 'silent' recording.

£5000 REAL Guitar Rig VS Garageband

In this video, I recreate the amps and mic configuration that myself and Bruce setup in the studio video above and compare them!
