The big lesson has arrived! We are going to be looking at barre chords and the various shapes across the fretboard. Once we have these shapes available in our playing, we unlock a whole new set off chords to choose from.

Lesson aims -

  • Learn barre chords and how they can be used across the fretboard

  • Tips on how to play these chord shapes comfortably

Exercise 1 - Bb Major

  • The part in which we barring for this chord is with our first finger over fret 1 on the 1st and 2nd string

  • To play barre chords more comfortably, we need our thumb on the back of the neck rather than over the top and we tuck our elbow in so the fretting hand has good control over the neck

Exercise 2 - B Minor

With this chord, we can use our first finger to barre across all 4 strings and then place our third finger on the 4th fret of the 4th string.

By doing this we can land in position slightly easier and quicker, as we don't need to worry about barring exactly on the first 3 strings.

Exercise 3 - D7

  • First finger barring across fret 2 of all 4 strings

  • Third finger on fret 3 of string 1.

By using the tips of our fingers to add notes to our barre, we get the correct angle to play the chords without a struggle and sound them out nicely.

Exercise 4 - C Minor 7 (Cm7)

  • Using our all first finger strength, we barre across all 4 strings on the 3rd fret

This particular chord can really help with our barring finger strength but to help with our fretting hand strength, we always use our thumb at the back of the neck for support.
