Mac vs iPad vs iPhone

Course: Home Recording With Garageband

In this video

In this lesson Andy covers the difference between versions of GarageBand on Mac, iPad and iPhone. It's functionally the same basic software across all 3, but there are some differences between versions on different devices.

Choosing the right device for you

  • It's generally easier to work on a desktop because we have more screen space, so it's easier to see what's happening
  • iPad/ iPhone user interface defaults to showing virtual instruments as playable via the touch screen (such as piano and drums), but DOES also allow much of the same editing capabilities as the computer version if you search for it
  • We can record more channels on desktop or laptop devices with an audio interface

What is an Audio Interface?

There are many different Audio Interfaces out there, and just like software packages they all have their plus and minus points. I recommend the Focusrite Scarlett series, in particular the 2i2 model, to get you started with home recording.

Mac/ PC audio interface - Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (or higher)

iPad/ iPhone audio interface - Focusrite iTrack Solo

Audio Interfaces - Key points

  • Choose an Audio Interface that has enough inputs - if you're just going to be recording 2 channels at a time then something like a Focusrite 2i2 will be fine with 2 inputs, but if you want to record more channels at once then you'll need a bigger Interface
  • If you're recording a really big project you can use multiple Audio Interfaces at once - just make sure you set the right inputs and outputs in your project!
