2nd Most Common Strumming Pattern

Course: Theory, Catchup and Half Way Consolidation

In this video

2nd Most Common Strumming Pattern ever! This lesson is from the Andy Guitar Beginner Guitar Course.

Let's look at the 2nd Most Common Strumming Pattern while also gaining an understanding of why some patterns are needed in different musical contexts.

The D DU UD strumming, which we all know by now, is perfect for faster BPM songs due to the broader movements meaning we move less at a higher tempo.

D D D DU Strumming

At slower BPM's, there is 1 pattern that tends to come up more frequently at this level and will fit many songs perfectly! This pattern goes: D D D DU x2 in 1 bar as shown in the example.

Crucially, there is:

  • More movement in this pattern than the D DU UD pattern

  • Accents needed on beats 2 and 4

  • a small twist of the wrist when strumming

  • 16th rhythm/embellishments

Accents needed on beats 2 and 4

Songs that use similar strumming patterns

  • Live Forever - Oasis

  • Let Her Go - Passenger

Next Up: Beginner Acoustic Jam Track 9 - G, D, Am & C

Well done! Let's jump into the next lesson of the course.
