A Shape Barre Chords

Course: Improver to Intermediate

In this video

We learn about A Shaped Barre Chords, another shape for your arsenal. Part of Andy’s Improver Guitar Course.

A shape root 5 barre chords - now that’s a mouthful of a title!

Easy concept though- instead of using an E chord shape for barre chords - we use an A chord shape! However, there are 2 methods to play this chord, which I demo in the video.

Great songs that use this major and minor A shape barre chords with tutorials on Andy’s website include;

  • Sultans Of Swing by Dire Straights (rhythm parts)
  • Coffee and TV by Blur
  • Layla by Eric Clapton (Acoustic & electric versions N.B. They are very different but both use many barre chords)
  • Hey Jude by The Beatles (without a capo)
  • Stand By Me by Ben E. King (without a capo, so A (root 6), F#m (root 6), D (root 5) and E (root 5)
  • My Sharona by The Knack (a personal favourite of mine!)

Next Up: Improver Jam Track 10

Well done! Let's jump into the next lesson of the course.
