Funk Genre Study

Course: Genre Studies

In this video

In this genre studies part of the intermediate course, we look at ‘Funk’. This should help to choose which genres you wish to specialise in after doing this course.

Funk inspired guitar playing is heard in all the core western music genres. From Nile Rodgers style rhythm playing in pop songs such as Uptown Funk, to funky rock riffs to funky lead lines.

Key stylistic points to remember are;

  • Clean guitar sound and chickas (chord hand string muting)
  • Blues inspired lead lines, very sparse to keep the emphasis on the beat, rhythm and bass line
