How to play Power Chords

We cover how to play Rock guitar power chords. These are great for any style of Rock guitar and are commonly used in rock and punk guitar songs and riffs. They also allow you to play chords that are not basic 'Open chords', and are very useful for improving or learning about barre chords!

Key technique points

  • Place your 1st finger down 1st, followed by your 3rdfinger then 4th finger

  • Have your 3rd finger on top of the 4th, so they are touching

  • Try to get your 1st finger to lay softly on strings 3, 2 and 1. You don't want those notes to sound, you just want to mute the strings.

  • Know that the note of the 1st finger gives the chord its note. This is the 'root note'
